A Charity’s Checkered Past

Excerpts:

In more recent years, the Sasakawa and Nippon foundations have supported seminars organized in Rangoon by the Myanmar [Burma] Institute of Strategic and International Studies on “Research on International Economy in Myanmar” as well as various health projects. The Sasakawa Foundation has also in part financed the Myanmar Times, a weekly newspaper established in March 2000, which the Australian monthly The Diplomat in its November-December 2007 issue quoted critics as describing as “little more than a cheerleader for the junta.”

Yoichi Yamaguchi, the former Japanese ambassador to Burma who recently caused an outcry by openly supporting the regime’s brutal suppression of the monks’ anti-junta demonstrations in Rangoon and elsewhere, has also been linked to some of the activities of Sasakawa’s outfits. On December 14, 2003, the New Light of Myanmar reported that then intelligence chief Gen Khin Nyunt had received Yamaguchi together with Nippon Foundation president Yohei Sasakawa, Ryoichi’s youngest son who now heads the philanthropical empire, after his father-the accused war criminal-passed away 12 years ago

The above paragraph was copied from a pro junta blog. I do not think the meaning of this paragraph really reflects what took place on that day as Daw Suu is unable to defend herself .She is still under detention by Military Junta. However, Daw Suu was right to advise ASEAN to not accept Burma as now all the ASEAN leaders openly admit that they have made a major political blunder by accepting Burma as a member.

After reading Bertil Lintner’s article, this blogger is of the opinion that Yoichi Yamaguchi was lucky that Daw Suu merely scolded him, ( if it was true) by looking at his tarnished background, and insincere approach towards the Burmese people. Actually Daw Suu is not an arrogant leader; on the contrary she is gifted with Political Wisdom! And like her father General Aung San she has the courage to say what is not right for the Burmese People.

Now everybody understands that ASEAN does not do anything good for the Burmese People.

Salute again to Aunty Suu for her courage !

Say Young Sone Comedians, start their international tour.

Burmese Comedians known in Burmese as “Thee Lay Thee ” are the latest among the artists who have demonstrated their courage by making jokes to the Military Junta’s brutal suppression of the recent uprising in Burma. Say Young Sone Anyein is the latest hits among the Burmese in Burma as well as overseas community.

Burma Today , recently interviewed these Comedians, Sein Thee, Kyae Thee, Pan Thee and Zee Thee. In Burmese Thee means fruits like apples and orange, rounded citrus in nature. However Thee, when used behind Kyae ( Star), KyaeThee become button of the shirts.

These comedians are famous among Burmese as two edible fruits, Pan thee ( Apple) and Zee Thee ( Plum). Another two comedians are the name of non edible things, Sain Thee means Diamond button, and Kyae Thee means Button of the Shirts. Burmese language has the same pronunciation with different meaning, like Thee when used behind Pan become Pan Thee which is apple, in case of Kyae which means Star followed by Thee become button of shirts.

Well respected activist comedian Zarganar, according to Sein Thee, passed the baton to the new Generation of the activist Comedians for Burma, who have guts to make jokes and satire against ruthless Military Generals.

So far they were not arrested, however their famous Say Young Sone Anyein VCD s were banned in Burma. Most of the Burmese people were able to see their jokes as the VCD were widely spread beyond the Junta’s control.

They are going to perform Anyein ( Burmese traditional dance combined with jokes) in KL, and Penang on 30th and of December and 6th of January respectively. Later they will perform in Singapore and Thailand.
