Tribute to Burmese in Singapore, for saying NO to Junta guided Referendum

Historic Moment

This blogger has been following the unfolding events of Burmese trying to say “No” to Military Junta guided Referendum in the Island state. Singapore authorities have good track record of not tolerating any protest of their own people in the small wealthy country.

Burmese in Singapore have shown exemplary discipline and courage by not breaking the law of their host country while excising the right of Burmese Citizens to vote No.

Incredible, amazing,.. these are the words for non Burmese readers when this blogger saw the photos posted over this blogosphere. Young and old, ladies and men,all waiting patiently to vote No, in front of Burmese Embassy. Most of them were with red T shirts saying NO to Junta drafted constitution.

Very foolish decision was made by Burmese Embassy staffs, that was not to allow, those who were wearing NO T Shirt to their compound. That action demonstrated how Free and Fare this Referendum is going to be to the whole world. Burmese diplomats in Singapore are telling the world that they do not want No voters to be inside their compound, and they want Yes people only. Then, what is the credibility of doing referendum?

Referendum is a democratic process where citizens of Burma are allowed to make decision of whether they approve or disapprove the draft constitution, drawn by hand picked delegates of Military Junta. Embassy staffs position should be only for free and fair Referendum to be taken place in their premise in Singapore. However, not allowing voters who were on Red NO T shirt means, there is no fairness at all for Burmese Citizens even right in front of international press.

In Japan, another ugly incidence happened when Burmese Embassy staffs called police for rowdy protesters outside their compound. There was a scuffle between police and Burmese voters waiting outside embassy . Japanese later apologized for misunderstanding the voters as protesters, however diplomats inside Burmese embassy seems to consider those who are going to vote No as their enemy.

These episodes have shown the free world that, there will be much more difficulties waiting for those who are going to vote No inside Burma on 10th May. Intimidation, threats, become daily routine for those who are ready to vote for No. According to local news there were No or X signs everywhere from the face of the dogs to the walls of the buildings. Burmese authorities seems to have extreme phobia to X signs. Pro Junta thugs and police were busy erasing all the X signs painted by activists on the road, buildings and face of the dogs.

This blogger would like to praise the courage and discipline of Burmese from Singapore by quietly singing” Kabar Ma Kyae” or Burmese National Anthem together with them from this insignificant blog of blogosphere.
