Famous cartoonist of Burma Kan Chun (U) has passed away this evening in Mandalay, Burma.

News from Burma claimed that he was diagnosed with liver cancer. He was admitted to a private hospital in Mandalay in his last days to control the bleeding from his intestinal tract.

U Kan Chun is famous for his cartoons that appeared in Burmese magazines and journals for several decades.

As a  well known and well respected writer, most of his articles are serious with food for thoughts for the readers.

Painting and art are among his hobbies, and he is a professional painter. His latest exhibition of paintings was launched just a few days  before his demise.

Although his faith is Islam, he does not have any problem with contemporary writers and artists of Mandalay.

He has left this world for an eternal journey. May Allah, the Creator of this Universe, bless his soul with glad tidings. (Amen)

I was again shocked to read U Kan Chun who is a famous writer as well as a cartoonist of Burma was allegedly down with Liver cancer.

Liver cancer, if it is true is a quick killer. Again sometimes other liver diseases like ameoboma or other liver diseases could be misdignosed as liver cancer.

Only thing we can hope for is misdignosis. Again the doctors in Burma are pretty familiar with hepato-carcinoma as it is a quite  common Miliganant disaese in the impoverished  country.

Liver cancer is preventable. Reduce the risk of Hepatitis B and C, controlled the food that contain Aflatoxin, a deadly produt from the fungus that is commonly seen in dried chilly and nuts. Alcoholism is the another cause of liver cancer.

U Kan Chun, is one among the rare and talented artists who contributed in many ways to Burmese cartoon and literature society. He is also known for producing numerous paintings.He seems to be trying an exhibit in Mandalay, according to Irrawaddy News recently.

My prayer will be for Saya U Kan Chun’s health. I am very sure that so many people who love his cartoons and his work will be doing the same thing.

There are many cross roads that bump among each other in this world at any moment in our life time. Some for a short moment and some for longer period. The interesting thing is that some of them will be only transiently met in the one of the cross roads, but will be remembered forever.

I was away from the keyboard as I have decided to stop active blogging a couple of months ago. Instead, I became a regular blog reader, refraining from writing comments .

I have met Ko Zaw One once only in my life. It was at  a car- wash in Mandalay that was at the road side  on the way to Taung Myo.

I think that was his relative house . He came in and chat with us while sharing Chinese Tea. He  was relax and that was the period that no one pay much attention to him as his prime time were over.

Ko Zaw One came to fame with a Shumawa  Movie “Say Lo Yar Say”. Kyaw Hein became popular almost at the same time.We all prefer Kyaw Hein than Zaw One as Kyaw Hein is totally fit into our taste, better than Zaw One.

But undeniable talent could be seen with so many movies of him, been kept on showing in the cinemas of Burma. His own style, own voice, is quite remarkable for all of us to put him in a neutral status. Not so good and not so bad.

But he was a late comer. His brother Maung Tin Oo’s ” Thin-Gyan-Moe” was a rare modern classic movie and masterpiece during the Socialist Era Burma. He was seen in a few scenes only in that movie.But his talented action will be remembered together with ” Thin Gyan Moe  in Burmese movie history as a legacy.

When he started singing “Thin Gyan” songs, I was no more in Burma. That could be the reason that I have watched most of his “Thin Gyan songs” almost every year .

Whenever I see his smiling face with the songs  such as “too ..po..too po” or “Mya Nan Dar”, Thin Gyan mood  would immediately bump into my heart, as though I was somewhere near Mandalay hill or around the “Kyone” even though physically thousands miles away from Burma.

I was shocked to read the news of his demise as he  was apparently healthy to me in some of his  latest Burmese movies. Anyway, he has gone, and left his legacy.

It was in mid seventies. I was a teen age boy  who started playing the locally made hollow guitar. There were only few local bands that we really look up with respect. The top band was the Play Boy, founded by Than Naing the drummer and vocalist, who became famous after the local talent shows, which were regularly aired from BBS (Burmese Broadcasting Service).

Later he was known as Play Boy Than Naing, and the lead guitarist was Ko Thein Tan. The base guitar was played by Ko Tommy Kyaw Naing.

For us watching live stage shows of the Play Boy band was really exciting, and our focus is not on the vocalists but mostly on the players of the band.

Our eyes were glued to the each and every movement of the players. We tried to learn and memorize the way Ko Thein Tan play the lead guitar, the style of Ko Tommy Kyaw Naing holding the base guitar. Almost everything is for us to imitate later in our own small band. There were no proper schools to teach this type of Rock music in Burma. Even we were dubbed by the Burmese authorities as “ The ghost of the road” or in simple Burmese called “ Lan Tha Ye”.

Yesterday, I was watching American Idol. One of the participant started singing the song “Born to be Wild”. That immediately refreshes my memory and also pushes me to write this post.

Ko Tommy, the base guitarist always sings the same song while playing a base guitar with his long fingers. Later most of the base guitarists followed his style in Burma.

At that time there were no TV, Video or movie clips to watch how the original vocalist Steppenwolf and his bands played the songs.

After watching the following youtube video than I have to admit that the Play Boy band was quite advance with the time for the Burmese youth in seventies.

We were called as “The Ghost of the road”. After thirty years those who called us The Ghost actually became the real Ghost of Burma.

We, “The Ghosts of the road” are nowhere to be seen in Burma anymore as most of us have migrated to the land of the strangers.

However, the Play Boy, Ko Tommy and the song “ Born to be Wild” will be remembered by all of us as one of the stories of “Once upon a time in Burma”.

Water Festival! It is known to the all Burmese people as Thingyan Festival that is welcoming event of the Burmese New Year with splashing water to each other wishing to cleanse the mind of everyone according to the Burmese culture.

My memory flies back to more than forty years ago. I was in the balcony of a bungalow house together with my parents watching the Water Festival right in front of our house. Then, I was an only four years old boy and I wanted to join my friends .My parents finally allowed. My first water pump was made of hollow wood, and I have kept it until I was in the University.

Later as a teenager, I have never missed a single Thingyan Festival in a various parts of Burma. That is the period that Saturday Night Fever was high in the West, and we did play some of the songs of  John Travolta and ONJ, together with the traditional Burmese Thigyan songs such as Mya Nan Dar.

During the University years I was mostly in Rangoon.The  noisy, cold and friendly Thingyan days ended in the bank of Inya Lake. We went around and around the old city Rangoon with group of friends in a World War two era Willy Jeep.

Then I was introduced to Mandalay Thingyan by my late father. Mandalay Thingyan was a special and a  unique event for all of us until I left Burma. It has  never gone beyond its tradition during those days. Mandalay Palace, is the center of Madalay, and most of the stages that perform traditional dance by Manadalay Girls were around the Palace.

Mandalay Hill is the resting place for most of the people before going back to town to watch various performances in jammed roads from  sunset until  dawn.

To me Manadalay Thyingyan is something that you should see as a bystander than participate. And you will never be able to forget it from your memory.

Sit Mone does not hit the keyboard for sometimes, as he became moody and less enthusiastic in writing the blog posts.

But, Burmese Thingyan is something that he will never forget  as all the memories are still intact, deep in his heart.

Oh friends!.. those are scattered all over this world. Shall we meet again before we disappear from the planet earth in a country once known as Burma to enjoy Thingyan Festival?

I was a busy person during a last couple of days. Being away from all the twenty first Century gadgets such as PC, lap top and Internet, except for an old Nokia Mobile phone was, a strange but a remarkable experience for me.
Nokia 6610 i was the one of the best mobile phones in the market when I bought it six years ago.
It was pretty expensive as it was with a color screen and GPRS enable.
However, there is no camera, no video and compare to the current 3G phones, my phone became an obsolete gadget after six years.

Anyway, it serves me very well. The battery is still original and its alarm clock never fails to wake me up in almost every morning.
On several occasion I have to turn back home from the way to work, when Nokia was not in my waist pouch. I have brought him to so many places including some oversea trips.

People told me that my phone is old and advised me to get the new one. I have always insisted that I would be using it until its hardware goes haywire!

Last few days were horrible for me as I was busy with something in personal nature. My Nokia was the only companion and playing very important role in sending and receiving information while I was driving most of the time.
Even when the battery got dry, it still keeps the missed calls and the voice mail and sms.

When I was alone, Nokia keeps all the information update. It was dropped from my hand on an occasion and all the parts came out scattered over the floor. A young lady came to rescue me and she fixed all the parts into its original shape within a minute. Then she asked me to try and it started again normally with usual ring tone.

While I was typing this post it rang once and the call was from several thousand miles away.
I am the person who does not have attachment to any gadgets. But strange enough for me, I have very strong attachment to my Nokia 6610i.
Are you going to call me a sentimentalist?

This post is some how personal to my old friend Judi. To me  I feel like accidentally bumping to an old buddy  in this blogosphere.

Judi, I think you must be wandering around this blogosphere and really surprise me that  finally you have found  my new home. Luckily you have left your comment on a post that I wrote in unsatisfactory Burmese, which you don’t understand. I am not happy with all my Burmese language  posts. Especially the last post is not clear for the readers that what I really wanted to say.

Burmese typing really make me exhausted.Slow pace of typing in Burmese sucks up all my idea and arrangement and grammar.

Anyway, Judi, I wish you to be happy as ever and let me know your new home.

ေရးျခင္တဲ့အေၾကာင္းရင္းက comment ေတြ ကိုဖတ္ၾကည့္ေတာ့ ေရးေနတဲ့ လူေတြကိုယ္တိုင္ Gay အေၾကာင္းကို ေသေသခ်ာခ်ာနားမလည္ပဲေရးေနတာေတြ ဖတ္ရလို႕ပါ။ အခ်ိဳ႕ ကေတာ့ ကိုယ္တိုင္ Gay ျဖစ္ပုံရပါတယ္။ အဆင့္ျမင့္ျမင့္နဲ႕ Gay ေတြကို ကာကြယ္ ေပးေနလို႕ပါ။ အဲဒီ ေဆာင္းပါးဟာျမန္မာ ေယာတ္က်ားတစ္ေယာက္က က်ေနာ္ထဘီဝတ္ခ်င္တယ္ လို႕ မယုံၾကည္ႏိုင္ေလာက္ေအာင္ အရွက္ကင္းမဲ့စြာ ေၾကညာတာကို အာလုံးက အဟုတ္ ဒီမိုကေရစီနဲ႕ Human Rights issue, Freedom of expression ေတြနဲ႕ေရာကုန္မွာစိုးလို႕ general အေနနဲ႕ေရးထားတာပါ။

အခု ေရးခ်င္တာကေဆာင္းပါးရွင္ကိုယ္တိုင္ Homosexuality ဆိုတဲ့ issue ကိုေသေသခ်ာခ်ာနားမလည္ပဲ gay rights ကိုပါးပါးေလးျဖတ္ျပီးလူေတြကို စာနဲ႕အဆိပ္ေႂကြးေနလို႕ ဆက္ေရးလိုက္ရတာပါ။

ကိုယ္ ရဲ့အလုပ္နဲ႕ဆက္စပ္ျပီး Cross dressing,မွအစ Transvestism, Transsexualism ေတြကို နားလည္ယံုမကအကူအညီေပး စိတ္ေျပာင္းလိုသူမ်ားကို ကူညီကုသေပးခဲ့ဖူးပါ တယ္။ No straight boy will become a gay after reading this post ဆိုသူ ကိုလဲ ကိုယ့္အေတြ႕အၾကံဳ တစ္ခုေျပာျပပါရေစ။ ျမန္မာျပည္ ျပင္ပက တကသိုယ္ၾကီးတခု က အေဆာင္တစ္ခုမွာ အေျခာက္ေတြၾကီးစိုးထားျပီး ေက်ာင္းသားသစ္ေလးေတြကို ဇတ္သြင္းတာၾကဳံရလို႕ သက္ဆိုင္ရာတာဝန္ရွိသူေတြနဲ႕ seminar ေတြတိုးတိုးတိတ္တိတ္လုပ္ျပီး အေဆာင္တခုထဲမွာၾကီးစိုးေနတဲ့အေျခာက္အုပ္စုၾကီးကို အေဆာင္အသီးသီးခြဲပို႕တဲ့အထိလုပ္ခဲ့ရပါတယ္။ ျမန္မာျပည္မွာမဟုတ္ဖူးေနာ္။ လြတ္လတ္စြာေျပာဆိုခြင့္ထိုက္သင့္သေလာက္ရွိတဲ့ႏိုင္ငံ တခုမွာပါ။
